Anxiety Simplified - The Calm Method

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is like a constant feeling of dread or unease. It's like you're constantly on edge, waiting for something bad to happen. But you're not sure what it is that you're waiting for. It's an uneasy feeling that can make it hard to concentrate or relax.

For some people, anxiety can be so debilitating that it interferes with their daily lives. Others may only feel anxiety in certain situations, such as when they're giving a presentation or taking a test. But regardless of how often or how severe anxiety is, it's not something anyone wants to feel.

Anxiety can feel like a lot of things.

For some, it's a racing heart and sweating palms. For others, it's a constant feeling of dread or a gnawing sense of unease. And for many people, it's a combination of all of these things.

Anxiety is different for everyone, but there are some common symptoms that tend to crop up. If you're feeling anxious, you may have trouble concentrating or sleeping, feel irritable or on edge, or have difficulty controlling your worry. anxiety can be physical, too, causing tense muscles, stomach problems, or shortness of breath.

No matter what anxiety feels like for you, it's important to remember that you're not alone. Millions of people around the world deal with anxiety every day, Anxiety disorders are the most common type of mental illness.

The Problem with Diagnosing Anxiety

Many people with anxiety don't even realise they have a problem. Instead, they may think that there's something physically wrong with them.

The reason is that anxiety, amongst other things, involves physical symptoms such as tense, sore muscles, fatigue, and  maybe an elevated heart rate.

This causes people to be more preoccupied with the symptoms of anxiety rather than the reason for them.

As a result, they make many trips to doctors and try countless alternative treatments without finding a real reason for their discomfort or a solution.

Often people with anxiety feel that others think of them as weird, weak, or even crazy if they can find nothing physically wrong with them.

These helpless feelings can make an individual feel more and more anxious. They can also cause one to be self-conscious.

Therefore, the process of successfully managing something like anxiety begins by understanding and recognising its characteristics.

This requires a degree of self-awareness.

Most people will ask, wouldn't learning about anxiety make us even more anxious?

Obviously, the answer to that question is: how are we going to manage it if we do not know what we are dealing with?

Having the right information about anxiety can sometimes help reduce the fear, the shame, and even the confusion that it can cause.

Throughout this process, we discover that anxiety is a very common and normal experience that can be managed successfully by doing simple things.
